Ukraine: brief information on the most relevant migration developments

As of 23 March 2022, more than 200 thousand Ukrainian citizens fleeing their homes due to Russian military aggression were already registered on the territory of the Czech Republic. They are entitled to temporary protection in the Czech Republic. As beneficiaries of temporary protection, they will be able to stay in the Czech Republic for up to 1 year (however, with regard to the validity of the lex Ukraine Act, until March 31st, 2023 at the latest), have access to the public health insurance system, education, labour market, additional assistance, such as accommodation, social services, basic social benefits and a financial contribution.
From March 22nd, 2022, the so-called special long-term visa for citizens of Ukraine will no longer be issued in the simplified regime. Act No. 65/2022 Coll. (the so-called Lex Ukraine) has come into force and established temporary protection for citizens of Ukraine fleeing armed conflict from Ukraine as well as for certain other categories of persons. Persons who have already obtained a special long-term visa will be automatically transferred to the temporary protection system.
The National Centre for Help and Assistance to Ukraine (NACPU) was established on February 28 to oversee the activities and coordinate the work of all the relevant authorities and also the regional authorities. Aside from that, a network of Regional Centres for Help and Assistance to Ukraine (KACPU) has been set up across the country to facilitate the registration and assistance process for those arriving from Ukraine. These centres serve as hotspots. People get registered, they can apply for a special long-term visa and are provided with additional assistance (accommodation, information about health insurance, work, psychological help, etc.).
A wide range of support is provided to those entering the country by state-run organizations, NGOs and also private businesses. The Ministry of Interior has launched a dedicated helpline and email address to provide the necessary information and assistance. A special website “Our Ukrainians” has also been launched by the Ministry to match the needs with available offers of support.
